New Heights Reached
for Sickle Cell Disease in Africa
The Timmerman Traverse - A Summit for Global Sickle Cell Awareness
From September 11-17, 2024, 20 biotech leaders united for the Timmerman Traverse, an awe-inspiring ascent of Mt. Kilimanjaro in support of Sickle Forward. The climb was not only a physical feat but a testament to the power of community and collective purpose. With grit and determination, the team reached the summit of Africa’s highest peak, raising over $1.25 million to advance sickle cell disease (SCD) screening and treatment across sub-Saharan Africa!
This monumental success underscores the commitment of the global biotech community to addressing health inequities. The funds raised will directly support Sickle Forward's initiatives, including rapid diagnostic programs, such as the HemotypeSC screening and Gazelle confirmatory testing, as well as basic treatment options like hydroxyurea. These resources will bolster our newborn screening efforts, particularly in rural and resource-limited areas, ensuring earlier intervention and better outcomes for children with SCD.
The event also showcased the strength of advocacy through action. Each participant brought their unique story and drive to the challenge, further amplifying awareness of SCD’s impact in the region. Building on the momentum of this climb, Sickle Forward is poised to expand its partnerships and programs, bringing life-saving interventions to thousands more.
The success of the 2024 Timmerman Traverse for Sickle Forward would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our corporate sponsors and over 1500 individual donors! This was truly a grassroots campaign fueled by a desire to increase global awareness of the plight of those affected by SCD.
Set the Pace
Our team of participants trained their bodies for the physical and mental rigors of high altitude. They embarked on a 'bucket-list' adventure to reach over a collective $1 million in funding for diagnosis and treatment of sickle cell disease in Africa. In addition, direct matching of the funds raised doubled the impact of this event and allowed for funds to be directed to sickle cell disease in the US as well.
Fuel the Climb
Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited disorder of the red blood cell, affecting over 6 million people around the world. SCD is a chronic, painful, debilitating illness that disproportionally affects individuals from malaria endemic parts of the world. Its highest rate of prevalence is in sub-Saharan Africa.
While recent advancements in research and treatment in the US and Europe have been promising, SCD continues to be a 'forgotten' illness for individuals living in the global regions where resources are limited.
